HSE Critical System / Equipment
Any part of an installation (system, equipment, software, etc.) which:
- has the purpose of preventing the release, or limiting the effect of, a major hazard, or which
- could cause, or substantially contribute to, the release of a major hazard if it failed.

IADC HSE Case Guidelines Issue 02 – (Safety Critical System/Element) – Such part of an installation and such of its plant (including computer programs), or any part thereof: a) the failure of which could cause or contribute substantially to; or b) the purpose of which is to prevent, or limit the effect of; a major accident.
