Any fire protection system or component which requires the manual or automatic detection of a fire and which initiates a consequential response.

Fire protection (passive)
Any fire protection system or component, which, by its inherent nature, plays an inactive role in the protection of personnel and property from damage by fire. Passive fire protection functions independently of a requirement for human, mechanical, or other intervention to initiate a consequential response.
