Substance

The OSPAR Guidelines for Completing the HOCNF define substance: an element and its chemical compounds in natural form or as a result of a process, including added material needed to make the compound stable, and including contaminants from the production process, but excluding solvents which can be separated without interference with the substance’s stability or without altering the substance’s properties. Substances were previously also called components.
