Cold welding of contacting material surfaces followed by tearing of the metal during further sliding/rotation. NOTE 1 Galling results from the sliding of metallic surfaces that are under high bearing forces. Galling can generally be attributed to insufficient lubrication between the mating surfaces. The purpose of the lubricating medium is to minimize metal-to-metal contact and allow efficient sliding of the surfaces.
